This place is disgusting. Its dirty throughout. The room was not cleaned. Hairs on the pillows. The box spring was dirty and looked like someone had vomited on it. There was mold in the windows and in the corners The handrails were dirty. Dirt in every corner. No way this place is doing anything to protect us from COVID-19. There's no elevators and the stairs were steep especially in the "annex." The annex was worse than the main building and was above two bars. We didn't stay, left without a refund (happily) and were lucky enough to get a room at the Best Western. Stay away from here at all cost!

Cute historic building with great photo history of Seward. Small room with small bath, both not updated in decades. Old furniture and bathroom needs a total makeover. All fine if the price reflected the condition of the property. But the price was over $250 a day for what is more like a boarding house or hostel than a hotel. I was traveling over the 4th of July, so "Welcome to Alaska" as they say. It's a pay-to-play destination that can charge whatevery they want based on demand and availability. So shame on me for not booking ealier.

Historic building which is pretty neat. Nice staff. Price is a little high for what you get. But then again it is in season

Location and friendly staff .room was clean but older

Old building with character. Photos and stories of early Seward line the corridor walls. Was handy for restaurants, businesses, and shore line on the south side of town. Across the street were free city bus rides to the north side of town about a mile away to catch Alaska RR and boat tours. Bus ran every half hour (I think) during the day.

the room was clean and everything worked, but there were holes in the wall and paint was chipped and fading. There are not too many low price options in Seward. I would recommend the hotel to a friend only if they were budget minded.

Even though Kevin was helpful, (upgraded our room, offered coupons, very friendly) I cannot recommend the hotel. It was old, in disrepair, and smelled.

Great location and an historical building filled with lots of local history. Unfortunately, it is suffering form lack of upkeep.

The staff were way beyond anything we've ever experienced at any hotel. Personal, friendly, helpful, above & beyond in every way. 11 out of 10 points.

We needed a last minute hotel and got just that. The rooms aren't big, ours had a private bath but the other rooms had shared baths in the hallway. Late at night I could hear people out of the window but all-in-all it was clean, a little dated and run down, but a good place.

This is a beautiful hotel, it's not the Hilton, it's better, it's not fancy but it has the historical feel, literally feels like your staying in a 5 star hotel back in time!

Alaska is interesting because of the natural beauty, but also because of its history as the last frontier. It's amazing to thing of who passed through the same spot previously. I felt more connected to this history at the Van Gilder. It's not a corporate luxury-imitation. It really feels historic. The manager even gave us an original register from the hotel from one week shy of 87 years ago (that little gift made me feel pretty special). The times, our circumstances and especially the glacial landscape have changed dramatically in that time. It causes me to reflect on whether I will be remembered as just a name on a paper in 87 more years.

Thanks for taking a moment to write us a review. We are disappointed to see such a low rating. We clean our rooms between guests which includes disinfecting and taking precautions against Covid-19. We hope you will reconsider and give us another chance to wow you. THanks for sharing.

Thank you for your feedback! Seward is a popular tourist destination during the summer and the prices of our hotel are moderate compared to other accommodations in town.

I am sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay, we will be doing maintenance on the building once the season is over. As far as vacuuming goes, the hallways, rooms, stairs and lobby are all vacuumed every day.
