Why You Should Fly to Norway

A fantastic destination for an exciting outdoor adventure or a culture-packed city break, Norway has something for everyone. Visit the country’s dramatic fjords, its pristine Arctic islands and its vibrant cities to enjoy a Scandinavian escape you’ll never forget.

When to Book Flights to Norway

Long, dark winters and short, mild summers mean your experience of Norway will depend on the time of year you visit. As fewer people visit in the icy winter months, this can be a good time to find cheap flights to Norway. Although the weather is likely to be chilly, winter is the perfect time to see the Northern Lights, have a go at dog sledding or stay in a fairy-tale ice hotel.

Although summer in Norway is brief, the exceptionally long days make this a fantastic time to visit the country. Book your flights to Norway in June or early-July and you’ll be able to experience almost 24-hour sunshine for the duration of your stay.

How to Find the Best Flight Deals to Norway

As Norway is a popular destination throughout the year, you’ll need a little help if you’re going to track down the best deals. Use the ‘Show flexible dates’ link on the Orbitz results page to check prices for flights either side of your selected days. As the cost of airfares to Norway can vary significantly during the week, this is a great way to find a cheap deal.

If you live in a city with multiple airports, make sure you select ‘All airports’ from the drop down menu when typing in your departure details. This will ensure you’re shown all possible flights to your destination. Sort your flight results by airline, duration, price and number of stops using the filters on the left of the page.

Main Airports in Norway

  • Oslo Airport (OSL)

Serving around 27 million passengers a year, Oslo Airport is the busiest in the country. A hub for Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, the airport offers direct flights to a wide choice of destinations in Europe, the Middle East and North America. Oslo Airport is exceptionally well served by local public transport options with trains, buses, coaches, metro services and taxis all available at the terminal.

  • Bergen Airport (BGO)

The second busiest airport in Norway, Bergen sees over six million passengers a year pass through its doors. Currently, passengers flying from Bergen Airport can travel to almost 60 destinations non-stop. Charter flights and seasonal services increase the number of options available at certain times of the year. Most of the flights that depart from Bergen are bound for short haul destinations across Europe. Buses and a light rail service connect the airport with the city center.

  • Trondheim Airport (TRD)

Located just over 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Trondheim is one of the largest cities in northern Norway. Most of the services that serve the airport are seasonal, although some year-round routes are available. A regular train service links Trondheim Airport with the city center.

Which Airlines Fly to Norway?

A number of airlines offer direct and connecting services from US destinations to Norway.

These include:

  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Norwegian Air Shuttle
  • British Airways

How to Get Around Norway

If you’re moving between cities in Norway, flying is generally the easiest way to travel. Internal flights connect many of the country’s main towns and cities, so reaching your destination should be easy.

If you’re traveling on a budget, or if you just want to see a little more of Norway’s beautiful landscapes, you can catch a bus or a train to most major destinations in the country. Train lines connect Oslo with Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Skien and a number of other towns and cities.

Places to Visit in Norway

Norway’s capital and the country’s largest city, Oslo is home to a fantastic choice of cultural attractions. Visit the impressive Viking Museum, take a stroll around the National Gallery and learn about Norway’s history in the Akershus Fortress. When you’ve had enough of sightseeing, head out for a hike in the beautiful Nordmarka Forest, just half an hour from the city center.

Bergen was the capital of Norway for centuries, and the city still plays an important role in the economic and cultural life of the country. One of the best places to learn about its illustrious past is in Bryggen. This Hanseatic wharf is a symbol of Bergen and a great place to start your tour of the city.

Located on a narrow peninsula in the west of Norway, Alesund is considered the gateway to the country’s spectacular northwest fjords and alpine mountains. Built entirely in the art nouveau style, it’s the perfect place to experience everyday life in Scandinavia.
