Why You Should Take A Flight To Mexico

The vast country of Mexico offers a dazzling variety of environments to explore, things to do and sights to see. From world-class beach resorts to snow-capped mountains and teeming, vibrant cities, Mexico offers something for everyone. Book one of our cheap flights to Mexico and you could be enjoying verdant tropical jungles, some of the most spectacular historical monuments on the planet, and a rich cultural offering.

When To Book Flights To Mexico

The sheer size of the country, and the shift in climate from the temperate north with its cooler winters to tropical heat of the southern half of the country, means that tourists book flights to Mexico virtually all year round. The rainy season runs from May to October, and the peak summer months of June through to August may prove too hot and humid. The period from November to May is probably the ideal time to visit if you wish to avoid the crowds associated with the peak tourist season.

How To Find The Best Flight Deals To Mexico

The Orbitz search tool enables you to tailor your flight choices exactly as you wish. If your itinerary isn’t completely fixed you can click on the ‘Show flexible dates’ option, opening up a wider range of flights and direct and indirect routes taking off on different days. Similarly, the ‘Nearby airports’ option offers alternative cities from which to take off and land. The fact that each airport offered comes complete with the distance from your first choice makes this the ideal tool for balancing cost against convenience and time.

Main Airports In Mexico

  • Mexico City International Airport (MEX)

Located just six miles to the east of Mexico City, Mexico City International is the largest and busiest airport in the country, handling more than 47 million passengers every year, from major cities all over the world. It offers flights to 52 domestic destinations, and is linked to Mexico City itself via a metro system and bus and taxi routes.

  • Cancun International Airport (CUN)

Cancun International Airport draws in over 19 million passengers per year from around the world. The airport offers an ADO bus service which runs shuttles to the Cancun and Playa del Carmen bus terminals every 30 to 45 minutes, as well as taxis which run directly to the city of Cancun, eight miles away.

  • Guadalajara International Airport (GDL)

The third busiest airport in Mexico is Guadalajara International Airport, located 10 miles south of Guadalajara. The airport is a major hub for flights from the US and for flights on to cities across Mexico, and it currently handles more almost 13 million passengers per year. A Servico Colectivo mini bus fleet runs from the arrivals lounge to the city centre every hour, while taxis can also be booked in arrivals.

Which Airlines Fly To Mexico?

Airlines which fly to Mexico directly from the US include the following:

  • American Airlines
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Aeromexico

How To Get To And Around Mexico

Mexico’s vastness mean it’s vital to plan getting around the country in advance if you want to make the most of your visit. More than 50 regional airports in Mexico handle internal flights, which can be booked on Mexican airlines such as VivaAerobus, Interjet and Volaris.

For a cheaper alternative, try Mexico’s extensive nationwide bus system. The buses range from luxurious modern vehicles to revamped school buses, and different classes of travel offer differing levels of comfort depending upon the budget.

Rail services are virtually non-existent, so consider hiring a car. If you take taxis, agree a fare in advance if the taxi is unmetered.

Places To Visit In Mexico

Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world, and is packed with attractions, from cutting-edge nightlife and delicious street food to dozens of museums and markets. The Zona Rosa district is packed with bars and clubs, San Angel is the hip destination for art galleries and craft markets, while anyone into Mexican history should explore the UNESCO-listed city of Teotihuacan.

Located on the northeastern tip of the country, Cancun offers mile after mile of flawless white beaches lapped by crystal clear water. Fully inclusive hotels and resorts line the waterfront, and the activities range from snorkelling and scuba diving to swimming with or spotting the likes of bull or whale sharks.

Guadalajara is the capital city of the state of Jalisco and offers a relaxed atmosphere and a wealth of historical architecture. Attractions include the cathedral, which was built in the 1500s, the Avenida Chapultepec, a tree-lined street which hosts a large flea market every afternoon, and Guadalajara Zoo.

Tips And Tricks For Traveling In Mexico

Much Mexican street food is delicious, but it should be treated with caution and only bottled water should be drunk.

Visitors should stay in the ‘tourist zones’ of larger cities and avoid any ostentatious displays of wealth.

Visitors from the US can stay in Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days. All visitors must carry a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (Multiple Immigration Form), known as an FMM, which they must keep with their passport at all times and must hand in when they leave.  An FMM will usually be provided by your airline, or can be obtained online before traveling.

Fare, taxes & fees: Fares include all taxes and fees, except baggage fees. Rates shown reflect fares found by other Orbitz users over the past 7 days. Due to rapidly changing airline prices & seat availability, these fares may no longer be available.

Refunds/changes/cancellations: Itinerary changes, if permitted for the fare, will have a $30 service fee charged by Orbitz. Additional airline charges may apply.

Other conditions: Schedules, fares and rules are subject to change without notice. Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights/dates or in all markets. Lower fares may be available. Fares will not be honored retroactively or in exchange for any wholly/partially unused ticket. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Fare rules are provided for the selected itinerary before booking.
