Flights to Lubbock land at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, which is located 7 miles from the city's central business district. Six major rental car companies operate at the airport, so you can pick up a car as soon as you arrive. Private shuttle companies and a taxi service also provide transportation from the airport to the center of the city. A taxi ride to downtown Lubbock usually costs between $16 and $19 with Yellow Cab, the airport's authorized taxi service.
The National Ranching Heritage Center depicts the history of the Lubbock area and the culture that ranching created, and the Silent Wings Museum celebrates aviation history. The Lubbock Lake Landmark features wildlife trails and views of the city, and Prairie Dog Town is a nature reserve where you can view prairie dogs in their natural habitat. Lubbock is the hometown of famed singer Buddy Holly, and the Buddy Holly Center presents the story of his life. A statue of Buddy Holly stands in front of the West Texas Walk of Fame, which is a memorial to other local performing artists. Holly is buried in Lubbock Cemetery, under a headstone bearing his official surname, Holley. McPherson Cellars Winery is one of the local wineries worth a visit and tasting tour, and Joyland Amusement Park is ideal for a family getaway.
Lubbock boasts a warm-to-hot climate, with highs in the low 90s Fahrenheit and lows in the mid- to high 60s during the hottest months of June, July and August. During the coolest months, December, January and February, highs are in the 50s Fahrenheit and lows dip into the 20s. In March and October, typical temperatures range from lows of 35 or 36 degrees to highs of 62 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s Fahrenheit are typical of May and September. April and October see temperatures ranging from highs in the mid-70s to lows in the mid-40s. Snow falls in Lubbock from November to February, so bring snow boots if you visit during these months.
