Checking in to flight home from Lihue was a bit time-consuming and chaotic. We had to remind ourselves this is a regional airport, not LAX. Other than that, experience was pleasant, and we were happy to fly 'the only airlines that still serves complimentary food and beverages'.

How to Get Around in Los Angeles?

The public transport network in LA does leave a little to be desired. Although there is a fairly new subway and elevated network, considering the vast size of the city it's not quite a complete service. Many of the bus routes run regular services, but they mostly stick to the main roads and rarely enter the smaller neighborhoods.

Walking can be an option around some of the more contained areas of the city, but it's not a great way to see more of wider LA. The same goes for cycling, although there is an expanding bike path network.

The car really is king in LA, and by far the most convenient way of getting around. There is a huge choice of rental car agencies at all airports, as well as other destinations around the city.

What Are the Must-Sees in Los Angeles?

If it's your first time in LA, then the major attractions like Hollywood, Universal City (including Universal Studios) are a big draw. Century City in downtown LA is also popular, with good access to Griffith Park and UCLA.

Many of the major landmarks and hippest areas are located outside of the city center. Beverly Hills and Bel Air are pristine paradises where the movie stars have their mansions, and everyone feels right at home strolling down Santa Monica beach.

Unlike many of the other major cities in the US, Los Angeles is all about laid-back lifestyles and soaking up the sun. So kick back and enjoy.

Tips for Traveling in Los Angeles

LA is not the easiest city to get around, particularly if you don't have a car. The public transport network is not really comprehensive enough for a city of this size and scale, and walking is generally not an option outside of specific neighborhoods. What's more, all those cars can mean big jams and pollution, which can be an issue in the heat of the summer.

Los Angeles When to Go

Locals will tell you that there’s no bad time to travel to Los Angeles. Although the winter months (December through March) typically feature more rainfall and slightly colder weather, the average temperatures in December and January are 68 degrees and 69 degrees, respectively. In the summer, when you’d expect unbearable heat, the average temperature rounds off to a very tolerable 85 degrees in August.

For travelers looking to enjoy Los Angeles’s terrific beaches and outdoor spots, the spring and summer months are ideal times to visit. Summer is the city’s high tourist season. You’ll pay more for airfare and hotel reservations and wait in longer lines at theme parks, such as Universal Studios and Disneyland, located in nearby Anaheim.

Although you might get rained on here and there in January and February, airfare and hotel rooms are typically less expensive. Plus, these winter months are the season for Hollywood awards like the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and, the king of them all, the Oscars. Find yourself in town during one of these glamorous celebrations, and you could very well come face to face with Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, or any number of Hollywood stars.
