Leashed, pets are generally welcome all over Albany’s outdoor areas. Walk your pet around Empire State Plaza, especially at night. While there is no official dog section at Washington Park, many allow their dogs to roam freely in one of the huge field areas.
For specific off leash areas, you will be pleased to hear that there are plenty of dog parks around the city. Westland Hills Dog Park is on the smaller side but has a lot of shade and smaller pools. Hartman Road Dog Park is another great option. They have fresh water and doggie bags as well. Department of General Services Dog Park also offers a shaded gazebo area to enjoy and has plenty of open space and running water to boot.
Normanskill Farm Dog Park is a more off-the-beaten-path destination with a ton of land and even a nearby creek for your pup to go swimming. Rumor has it that the next-door country club will let you go hiking and skiing on their lands in the winter.
When you are hungry, visit one of the many places that offer pet-friendly outdoor seating. The Phoenicians Restaurant serves some seriously delicious Lebanese food. Ted’s Fish Fry has been around for over sixty years and gives you a menu full of delicious American classics. The Cheese Traveler specializes in cheese dishes. Afterwards, get dessert at Emack & Bolio’s, where your pup will not only be allowed inside, he will get to have his own doggie sundae.
